Rich - I have no idea, but I'm sure there are a LOT. I will get a better idea once I start harvesting worms from the pile.

Patricia - I will likely check on it again this week to see what temps are like. Not a whole lot will change once it warms up (the weather that is) - but I will certainly be taking some worms out of the system (to fill orders). I will also being adding more food materials over time as well. As it warms up I will likely need to feed much more often.

Scott - the tarp definitely helps as long as the sun is out (and shining into my dad's backyard). In coming weeks, as we start to see a lot more sunny days (and the sun becomes stronger), this is going to really help. I have little doubt that this system will be at an optimal temp WELL before spring actually arrives.

I was thinking. If you had a black tarp/or one that help keep heat in your pile would a lot warmer. You would obviously need to keep the snow off for the tarp to work effectively if you are going for the solar gain effect.
