I was amazed as well how well the worms survived in my winter compost heap with a large vertical worm tunnel in it. Lovely finished stuff when I harvested. The worms were mostly turned into the next compost heap to continue their good work.
I am really hooke on this vermicomposting. Thanks for all you are teaching us by example.

Yep – just like an oversized “worm tower”. If you read some of the earlier posts from this spring, you’ll see that I just ended up leaving it completely as-is (as-was? lol) over the winter – i.e. with zero additional protection. Surprisingly, there were loads of composting worms in there when I finally got around to removing it this spring and dumping out the material.

I pictured having a bunch of square foot gardens with a network of trench/walkways (with removable boards) in between – and maybe a vermi-fertilization system in the middle of each bed.

I keep the trenches covered with boards to protect against direct sunlight and the heat. The worms love fresh tomatoes and eggplant. I give them the ones that have some rot or fallen off the plant. Also, I have taken some pictures. How can I send them?

Same idea, tube or tub, holes drilled so worms can come an go spreading their castings around the bed. Keep supplied with food and moisture.
What will you do during winter time? I think the worms will survive providing you fill the tub with leaves for insulation.
