Hi Jane
I do recommend using a pit underneath a vermi-planter, but basically it is an above-ground planter box that has compartments for growing plants AND a compartment for vermicomposting. The plant roots are able to extended into the vermicomposting compartment - so it is similar to other vermigardening approaches in that regard. Hope that clarifies.

Bentley, is the vermi-planter idea using a trench down the length of a large raised bed, or using pits or buried buckets with holes in which bedding and food scraps are regularly added?

Great Mark - I love the name! Haha
Reminds me of the sort of hybrid, multi-functional systems I enjoy creating (like my hay bale gardening, trench vermicomposting worm bed back in 2015)
Definitely interested to learn more about this project if you go ahead with it. Will you have a water reservoir of some sort for the "wicking"?
